‘‘Subtle signs of tranquility”

Los Angeles Times 9/30/04

Though widely varied in media and visual tactics, Hiroko Yoshimoto‘s exhibition “Lines and Signs II” fills the Studio Channel Islands Art Center gallery with an undulating tranquility, mixed with subtle provocations. Among other themes, the longtime Ventura-based artist and Ventura College art teacher correlates the rippling, rhythmic effects of language (“Japanese Alphabet”), music notation (“Mozart Lamp”) and the sea (“Water World”) in ways both sensuous and cerebral. A companion show, “Mentor to Many” is a showcase by her students, including Julia Pinkham, Katherine McGuire and Roxie Ray-Bordelon. –Josef Woodard.
